Hardwax Oil or Lacquer?

Why Choose Hardwax Oil?

Hardwax oil both protects and strengthens wood, while also often enhancing its color with a natural, unique tone. The „hard” variant creates a thin, nearly invisible layer that shields the wood from water and dirt — all without forming an artificial film. This allows the floor to breathe while staying protected.

Hardwax oils are derived from natural ingredients, making them safe for health and the environment. In fact, such oils are often used to finish wooden toys for small children, which speaks to their safety and non-toxicity.

Additional Advantages of Hardwax Oil:

  • If the floor is damaged, you can repair a small section without sanding the entire floor, unlike with lacquered finishes.

  • Oil enhances the natural grain and appearance of the wood.

  • The surface feels warm and pleasant to the touch — you can truly feel the wood.

  • Oil-finished floors are non-allergenic and do not generate static electricity, so they do not attract dust.

  • Dust is barely visible, even on dark oiled floors.

  • The surface is less slippery and scratches are less visible.

  • Oiled wood allows more natural and stable wood movement.

  • It ages beautifully, gaining character over time.

To maintain durability and ease of care, we recommend treating the floor with a transparent care wax during the first few years of use. The frequency of maintenance depends on the original finish and typically ranges from every few months to once a year.

Lacquered Floors – Are They Still Worth It?

When it comes to lacquered flooring, many of our customers point out a key drawback: local repairs are impossible. If the surface is damaged, the entire floor typically needs to be sanded and refinished.

Though modern lacquers are becoming more eco-friendly, this shift has also made them softer and more prone to surface damage compared to older formulations.

Comparison: Pros and Cons of Lacquered Flooring

Disadvantages Advantages
Often made from synthetic chemicals, less eco-friendly Multiple coats form a thick protective layer
Local damage requires sanding the entire surface Can provide a high-gloss finish
Feels cold and slippery underfoot Easy to clean and maintain
Attracts dust due to static electricity
Scratches are highly visible on the lacquered surface
